What is Happy Joyous and Free?

So much music is about angst and breakups and feeling unloved. Some tunes even encourage us to cope with adversity by getting drunk and high. And I get it. This is how some musicians feel at times and their music expresses it.

But if you’re trying to manage an addictive behavior(s), that encouragement can be triggering.

Me? At this point in my life, I prefer to surround myself with joy.

Happy Joyous and Free is a safe, loving place for you to enjoy optimistic music and hopeful messages. We spend dozens of hours each week to curate kick ass music (mostly new tunes… rock and soul with a little blues, hip hop, country, swing and jazz to assemble each hour long episode. If you like hearing (mostly) new songs you can (mostly) move your body to, you’re in the right place.

HJF is hosted by Cool Papa Jeff (that’s me) and airs weekdays in Arlington VA and Washington DC on WERA.FM, an independent radio station at 96.7 FM. All episodes are archived on this site.

In 2018 and 2019 the show began as Rocking Sobriety, and in 2020 we changed the name to Let the Music, as in let the music set you free and be your guide. I invite you to check out previous episodes of Rocking Sobriety and Let the Music under the Listen tab.

Why is it called Happy Joyous and Free?

I’m pretty sure everyone wants to live a happy, joyous life and be free from unwanted (compulsive?) behaviors we think might help us feel good about ourselves, but really don’t.

So we play only positive and upbeat music that will help you feel that way.

We hope you’ll enjoy our shows and choose this Alternative Happy Hour.

Who should listen to Happy Joyous and Free?

Everyone who lives or strives to live a happy, joyous and free life is welcomed.

Is Happy Joyous and Free a religious program?

I can see how the name may make you think that. But no, I don’t think it religious and no one who’s listened has called it that. Perhaps inspirational at times. It’s mostly music to guide and uplift you.
